UN General Assembly Updates | with Biden and Boris

World leaders gathered today in New York City for the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Member states addressed two parallel challenges: ending the Covid-19 pandemic and redefining the post-pandemic global economy.

President Biden delivered the first UNGA speech as US President and pushed for a unified response to major issues, including climate change.

President Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson continued to stress action on climate change in an Oval Office meeting Tuesday after the President’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly earlier in the day.

“Earlier today I addressed the United Nations General Assembly and I made clear the climate has to be the core area of action for all of us, and as we look ahead to the UK hosted COP26, which I’m really anxious to attend in Glasgow in November,” Biden said.

“Our economies have to work together, including through our build back better world initiative that we launched in Cardiff Bay, and today we’re going to discuss the next steps on all of this and as well as how the US and UK can continue our cooperation in Afghanistan and the Indo-Pacific and around the world and I want to thank you again Boris for making the effort to be here,” he added.

Johnson thanked the President for America’s cooperation on a number of fronts including lifting a ban on British beef, travel restrictions and most importantly climate change.

“I think the most important thing today has been your speech Joe to UNGA where you made a commitment on supporting the world to adapt to climate change, doubling the American commitment,” Johnson said, calling it fantastic to see the US stepping up and leading on the issue.

Johnson also discussed the new trilateral partnership among the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom to help Australia acquire nuclear-powered submarines, saying it “has great potential to benefit the whole of the world with security.”

Asked is Britain was still at “the back of the queue” for a free trade deal, the President said he would talk about trade with Johnson today and they will “have to work that through.” Biden said he does feel very strongly about the Irish Accords and keeping those in place amid Brexit.

“We spent enormous amount of time and effort in the United States. It was a major bipartisan effort made and I would not at all like to see, nor I might add would many of my Republican colleagues, like to see a change in the Irish Accords, the end result having a closed border again,” Biden said, drawing an agreement from Johnson.

Biden also briefly weighed in on the possible extradition of Anne Sacoolas, the US woman accused of killing 19-year-old Harry Dunn in August 2019 while she was driving on the wrong side of the road in England, saying the case is being worked on and he believes there had been a civil settlement reached. Donald Trump Sues Mary Trump

United States Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday sued his estranged niece and The New York Times over a 2018 story about his family’s wealth and tax practices that was partly based on confidential documents she provided to the newspaper’s reporters.

Trump’s lawsuit, filed in state court in New York, accuses Mary Trump of breaching a settlement agreement by disclosing tax records she received in a dispute over family patriarch Fred Trump’s estate.

The lawsuit accuses the Times and three of its investigative reporters, Susanne Craig, David Barstow and Russell Buettner, of relentlessly seeking out Mary Trump as a source of information and convincing her to turn over documents. The suit claims the reporters were aware the settlement agreement barred her from disclosing the documents.

The Times’ story challenged Trump’s claims of self-made wealth by documenting how his father, Fred, had given him at least US$413 million over the decades, including through tax avoidance schemes.

Mary Trump identified herself in a book published last year as the source of the documents provided to the Times.

Trump’s lawsuit alleges Mary Trump, the Times and its reporters “were motivated by a personal vendetta” against him and a desire to push a political agenda.

The defendants “engaged in an insidious plot to obtain confidential and highly-sensitive records which they exploited for their own benefit and utilised as a means of falsely legitimising their publicised works,” the lawsuit said.

In a statement to NBC News, Mary Trump said of her uncle, “I think he is a loser, and he is going to throw anything against the wall he can. It’s desperation. The walls are closing in and he is throwing anything against the wall that he thinks will stick. As is always the case with Donald, he’ll try and change the subject.”

A Times spokesperson, Danielle Rhoads Ha, said the lawsuit “is an attempt to silence independent news organisations and we plan to vigorously defend against it.”

The Times’ coverage of Trump’s taxes, she said, “helped inform citizens through meticulous reporting on a subject of overriding public interest”.

One of the Times reporters, Craig, responded in a tweet: “I knocked on Mary Trump’s door. She opened it. I think they call that journalism.”

Trump is seeking US$100 million in damages.

Trump filed his lawsuit almost a year to the day after Mary Trump sued him over allegations that he and two of his siblings cheated her out of millions of dollars over several decades while squeezing her out of the family business.

That case is pending.

Mary Trump, 56, is the daughter of Donald Trump’s brother, Fred Trump Jr, who died in 1981 at age 42. Mary Trump was 16 at the time.

Trump’s lawsuit focuses only on the Times’ 2018 story, a Pulitzer Prize finalist. It makes no mention of another Times scoop on Trump’s taxes last year, which found he paid no federal income taxes in 10 of the previous 15 years.

According to the lawsuit, Mary Trump came into possession of more than 40,000 pages of “highly sensitive, proprietary, private and confidential documents” through a legal case involving Fred Trump’s will.

The documents including financial records, accountings, tax returns, bank statements, and legal papers pertaining to Donald Trump, Fred Trump and their businesses, Trump’s lawsuit said.

In 2001, about two years after Fred Trump died, Mary Trump and other family members entered into a settlement agreement with confidentiality and non-disclosure clauses that barred them from sharing information about Fred Trump’s estate in, among other venues, newspaper stories, Trump’s lawsuit said. The agreement also covered the estate of Fred’s wife, Mary Anne Trump, who died in 2000.

Trump, who bashed the Times repeatedly during his presidency as the “failing New York Times,” noted in the lawsuit that the 2018 article was viewed more online than any previous Times article and that the New York Times Company’s stock price jumped 7.4 per cent the week it ran.

The Times’ story said that Donald Trump and his father avoided gift and inheritance taxes by methods including setting up a sham corporation and undervaluing assets to tax authorities. The Times says its report was based on more than 100,000 pages of financial documents, including confidential tax returns from the father and his companies.

Mary Trump’s book, Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man, debuted in the midst of Donald Trump’s re-election campaign last year. Donald Trump’s brother, Robert, tried unsuccessfully to have a court block the book’s publication, citing the 2001 settlement agreement.

Ruling in Mary Trump’s favour, a judge said the confidentiality clauses, “viewed in the context of the current Trump family circumstances in 2020, would ‘…offend public policy as a prior restraint on protected speech”.

In the book, Mary Trump recounted providing the family financial records that underlaid the Times’ reporting. The book sold more than 1.3 million copies in its first week and soared to No 1 on the Times’ bestseller list.

In an interview connected with the release of the book, Mary Trump told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos she didn’t feel the non-disclosure agreement “mattered one way or the other because what I have to say is too important”.

Justin Trudeau Wins Third Term As Canada’s Prime Minister

Justin Trudeau has won a third term as Canada’s prime minister, but his early election gamble to win a majority of seats failed.

The Liberals won the most seats of any party, taking hold of 157 – the same number they won in 2019, and 13 short of the 170 needed for a majority in the House of Commons.

It means Mr Trudeau, 49, and his second consecutive minority government will have to rely on other parties to govern.

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole, whose party placed second, conceded defeat as results trickled in late into the night.

Early results indicated the Conservatives had 121 seats, the same number they won in 2019. The leftist New Democrats won 29, the Quebec-based Bloc Québécois were down three seats to 28, and the Greens remained at two seats.

But Mr Trudeau’s party failed to win enough seats to avoid having to rely on help from other parties to pass legislation.

Following his victory, he thanked his supporters and promised he would work with other parties for the good of all Canadians.

“You are sending us back to work with a clear mandate to get Canada through this pandemic and to the brighter days ahead,” he said.

He also highlighted the issues important to his party’s platform – climate action, affordable homes and childcare, pledging to continue to work on them.

“You have given this government and this parliament clear direction,” he added.

The Canadian leader had entered the election leading a stable minority government that was not under threat of being toppled.

As a result, the opposition relentlessly accused him of calling an unnecessary early vote – two years before the deadline – for his own personal ambition.

Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal, said Mr Trudeau “lost his gamble to get a majority so I would say this is a bittersweet victory for him”.

Nelson Wiseman, a political science professor at the University of Toronto, said “hubris led Trudeau to call the election”.

“He and the Liberals won the election but lost the prize they were seeking. This is only a great night for the Liberals because two weeks ago it appeared they would lose government outright something they could not fathom before they gambled on an election,” he said.

Mr Trudeau believed Canadians didn’t want a Conservative government during a pandemic with their scepticism surrounding lockdowns and vaccine mandates, which he argued would be dangerous, and said people needed a government that followed science.

His government has spent hundreds of billions of dollars to support the economy through lockdowns and Canada is now one of the most vaccinated countries in the world.

He also supports the jab becoming mandatory for Canadians to travel by air or rail, something the Conservatives oppose.

Mr O’Toole has not required his party’s candidates to be vaccinated and has not said how many were unvaccinated.

The 48-year-old military veteran, also believes getting the vaccine is a personal health decision, despite a growing number of vaccinated Canadians becoming upset with those who refuse to get vaccinated.

“Our support has grown, it’s grown across the country, but clearly there is more work for us to do to earn the trust of Canadians,” he told his supporters.

“Still Alive, Even Though Some People Wanted Me To Die” | POPE FRANCIS

Pope Francis recently delivered an apparent rebuke to an American Catholic cable-and-satellite network EWTN for having “no hesitation” in attacking his eight-year-old pontificate, slamming what he termed attacks on the Roman Catholic Church from such critics s “the work of the devil.”

Francis, the first member of the Jesuit order to become the supreme leader of the world’s 2.2 billion Roman Catholics, made his comments during a meeting with 53 Jesuit priests in Bratislava, Slovakia, on Sept. 12.

The Rev. Antonio Spadaro, editor-in-chief of La Civiltà Cattolica (Catholic Civilization), reported the comments in the 171-year-old Jesuit biweekly published in Rome.

In what observers call a reference to EWTN Global Catholic Network, based near Birmingham, Alabama, the pope called out those who a questioner said viewed him “with suspicion.”

Francis responded, “There is, for example, a large Catholic television channel that has no hesitation in continually speaking ill of the pope. I personally deserve attacks and insults because I am a sinner, but the [Catholic} Church does not deserve them. They are the work of the devil. I have also said this to some of them.”

EWTN, founded in 1981, says it is the world’s largest “religious media” organization, with 11 networks broadcasting “in multiple languages … to over 310 million television households in more than 145 countries and territories.” The group also claims more than 500 domestic and overseas AM and FM radio affiliates and publishes “The National Catholic Register” newspaper.

Rival independent Catholic newspaper National Catholic Reporter said Tuesday that EWTN is one of the pontiff’s most persistent critics. “No other Catholic media conglomerate has regularly featured such open criticism of Francis,”according to Vatican correspondent Christopher White.

Mr. White singled out EWTN personality Raymond Arroyo as hosting a “papal posse” of critics, as well as the Vatican’s former ambassador to the U.S., Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò. The reporter reported that current apostolic nuncio Archbishop Christophe Pierre “had expressed displeasure” about the coverage to Michael Warsaw, chief executive at EWTN.

An EWTN spokeswoman did not immediately have a comment when contacted by The Washington Times.

The pontiff also struck back at Roman Catholic clergy who publicly criticize his pronouncements.

“There are also clerics who make nasty comments about me,” Francis said. “I sometimes lose patience, especially when they make judgments without entering into a real dialogue. I can’t do anything there. However, I go on without entering their world of ideas and fantasies. I don’t want to enter it and that’s why I prefer to preach, preach.”

Francis also told the Slovakian Jesuits he felt ideology surrounding the issue of gender “is dangerous” and that ideologies should be exposed “at their roots.”

He explained, “It is [dangerous] because it is abstract with respect to the concrete life of a person, as if a person could decide abstractly at will if and when to be a man or a woman … the abstraction in which everything is possible, not about the concrete life of people and their real situation.”

The pope distinguished gender identity from “the homosexual issue,” saying, “If there is a homosexual couple, we can do pastoral work with them, move forward in our encounter with Christ.”

Francis, who brought 12 Syrian refugees from a Greek island camp to the Vatican in 2016, told one of the Slovakian Jesuits that nations should overcome a fear of refugees.

“I believe that we must welcome migrants, but not only that: We must welcome, protect, promote and integrate,” the pope said. “All four steps are needed to truly welcome. Each country must know how much it can do. Leaving migrants without integration is leaving them in misery; it is equivalent to not welcoming them.”

He also addressed critics of his July 2021 move to restrict the use of the traditional Latin Mass in Catholic churches. He told of a cardinal who instructed two new priests who wanted permission to study Latin to first learn Spanish and Vietnamese so they could celebrate the Sacrament in the language of these constituencies in their diocese. After mastering those languages, the cardinal reportedly said, “I will give you permission to study Latin.”

Francis said this cardinal “made them return to earth” by focusing their attention on community needs. He added, “I go ahead, not because I want to start a revolution. I do what I feel I must do. It takes a lot of patience, prayer and a lot of charity.”

The pontiff, who underwent surgery in July in which half of his colon was removed, will turn 85 in December. He also suffers from sciatica and, earlier in his life lost half of a lung. One Vatican blogger, Luis Badilla, said at the time that Francis’ medical condition is “severe and degenerative.”

Francis admitted to his peers in Bratislava that “undergoing that surgery was a decision I didn’t want to make. It was a nurse who convinced me.”

He also jibed those ready to consign him to a crypt inside St. Peter’s Basilica, the traditional resting place of his predecessors.

Asked how he was physically, Francis replied, “Still alive, even though some people wanted me to die. I know there were even meetings between prelates who thought the pope’s condition was more serious than the official version. They were preparing for the conclave. Patience!”

UK GOVT. Overhauls Travel Rules

The UK government announced Friday it is simplifying its controversial traffic light travel rules and removing mandatory Covid tests for vaccinated travelers returning to England from countries on its safe list.

Grant Shapps, the UK transport minister, said in a series of Twitter posts that as of October 4, the current red-amber-green country lists that govern arrivals into England would cease to exist. In their place will be a “simpler” red list of no-go destinations.

The new system will help in “striking the right balance to manage the public health risk as No.1 priority,” Shapps said.
In addition, he said, eight countries will be removed from the red list on October 22, including Turkey — a popular destination for UK vacationers — Bangladesh, Egypt, the Maldives, Oman, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Kenya.

The UK will no longer require pre-departure tests before arrival into England for fully vaccinated travelers coming from non-red list countries starting from October 4, said Shapps.
“From later in October, (fully vaccinated travelers) will be able to replace the day two PCR test with a cheaper lateral flow,” he added, referring to the test required two days after arriving in England.

Travelers who test positive for Covid-19 will have to quarantine and take a confirmatory PCR test at no additional cost, “which would be genomically sequenced to help identify new variants,” according to the statement published by UK government on Friday.

According to Shapps, the updated measures are aimed at reducing costs and are possible due to the higher levels of vaccination in the country.

“Public health has always been at the heart of our international travel policy and with more than 8 in 10 adults vaccinated in the UK, we are now able to introduce a proportionate updated structure that reflects the new landscape,” said Shapps in a statement.
‘Two steps behind’

The move, which does not cover international arrivals to the other UK nations — Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales — is likely to be welcomed by travelers and the wider travel industry, however, some say it doesn’t go far enough.

“Across the entire pandemic, the UK’s travel rules have been two steps behind the rest of Europe,” says Willie Walsh, the director general of the International Air Transport Association. “This has devastated the UK’s travel industry with countless job losses.

“While the measures announced today are a move in the right direction, there is no reason to delay scrapping the wasteful and ludicrously expensive PCR testing regime for fully vaccinated travelers. If it’s the right thing to do, let’s get on with it.”

US Millionaire Found Guilty of Murdering His Best Friend

Jurors convicted Robert Durst of the 2000 shooting of Susan Berman, who reportedly had information on the disappearance of Durst’s first wife, Kathie.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced that a jury found the 78-year-old real estate heir guilty of the first-degree murder of Berman, his former longtime friend and confidante.

“The jury’s decision demonstrates how our legal system can work to hold accountable people regardless of their wealth and status in life,” Gascón said. “I want to commend our prosecution team and investigators for their diligent work to ultimately bring justice for those who have been waiting more than 20 years.”

During the trial, prosecutors said Durst shot Berman in her Los Angeles home on the night of Dec. 23, 2000.

Prior to her death, Berman reportedly intended to speak with New York investigators about the disappearance of Durst’s wife, Kathie, who went missing in 1982 and has yet to be found. According to prosecutors, she wanted to confess to giving Durst a false alibi.

Durst first went on trial in March 2020, but proceedings were brought to a grinding halt when the coronavirus pandemic began. After a 14-month break, the jury returned to the Los Angeles courthouse in May to resume proceedings.

Durst’s sentencing has been set for Oct. 18.

The 2015 HBO docuseries The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst brought renewed attention to Berman’s death and Kathie’s disappearance. Friends and family of the deceased spoke to the filmmakers about their loved ones, as well as their suspicions of the New York real estate heir.

Additionally, Durst himself participated in an interview with the documentarians, before seemingly admitting to killing Berman and his missing wife. In the season finale, Durst forgot his microphone was on and went to the bathroom, where the series showed him angrily whispering to himself, “You’re caught! What the hell did I do? Killed ’em all, of course.” Durst later claimed the scene had been edited in a misleading way.

Durst was arrested in New Orleans on March 14, 2015, a day before the bombshell finale aired. Since then, his legal team has claimed that prosecutors had no “physical evidence,” and were basing their case on “speculation and hearsay.”

The 78-year-old previously went on trial for the 2001 death of Morris Black, one of Durst’s neighbors in Galveston, Tex. who was found deceased in a local bay. He claimed that he shot black in self-defense after attempting to wrangle a gun out of Black’s hand.

“America Will Cease To Exist These 3 Years” – Donald Trump

The Former president of United States of America, Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed that the United States would come to an end in the next three years, without explaining what that might mean in practice.

The US “has gone really downhill in the last eight months like nobody has ever seen before”, Trump said during an appearance on Sean Spicer’s show on conservative news channel Newsmax.

“[If we] go to these elections coming up in ‘22 and ‘24, we are not going to have a country left,” he said, falsely claiming that the 2020 election “was rigged” and “we are not gonna have a country left in three years.”

Immediately after this statement Spicer, who served as the former president’s press secretary, hastily ended the interview with: “You’ve been very generous with your time, thank you for that.”

Newsmax is facing a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit from Dominion Voting Systems for allegedly spreading misinformation about fraud involving the company’s voting machines in the 2020 presidential elections. Newsmax has defended its coverage, saying the network “simply reported on allegations made by well-known public figures”.

Over the last few months, Trump has aggressively criticised president Joe Biden for withdrawing US troops from Afghanistan. He continued to attack Biden on Tuesday.

“He [Biden] was going to be the great unifier… He is not a unifier, he is the opposite, he is worse than Obama. Of course, Obama is probably running the government now according to many,” Trump said, according to the Independent.

Trump is reportedly aspiring to run for the president’s office again in 2024. Despite not making a formal announcement, he has kept the door open for a presidential run through crowdfunding and rallies, and hinted repeatedly that the only reason he isn’t announcing already is because of campaign financing rules.

In an interview with the Washington Examiner in August, Spicer claimed that Trump will run for office again. “A couple of months ago, I wasn’t sure. Now, there needs to be something that will keep him out,” he said.

Hinting at this, Spicer said: “Mr Biden has sought to kick off 11 of your appointees to service academies, including my appointment to the US Naval Academy. If you ran for president again and won, excluding the statutory boards, would you kick off every Biden presidential appointee?”

The former president responded that he might “because what he [Biden] did is unprecedented”.

“We have great people on the boards, for them to be thrown off — it never happened before,” Trump said. “They [the Biden administration] are vicious people, that’s what they are good at. They use prosecutors all over the place, local prosecutors, federal prosecutors and yet Hunter Biden [Joe Biden’s second son] is fine.”

He added: “What they are doing is horrible, these are great people, including you Sean. It is very disrespectful for our country.”
