Poland Will Have To Pay 1 Million Euro PER DAY in Row With EU

The European Commission is already withholding from Poland a €36-billion grant for post-pandemic rebuilding, the ECJ’s new fine being another attempt by Brussels to bring Warsaw to heel.

The European Court of Justice has said on Wednesday that it ordered Poland to pay a million euro (around $1.2 million) every day until it brings its judicial system in line with European Union standards.
The harsh penalty was “necessary in order to avoid serious and irreparable harm to the legal order of the European Union and to the values on which that Union is founded, in particular that of the rule of law,” the Luxembourg-based court said in its ruling.

The fine comes in response to the controversial decision by Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal, which earlier this month prioritized national laws over those of the European Court of Justice (ECJ).

Warsaw and Brussels have been at odds since the nationalist Law and Justice party came to power in Poland in 2015, strongly opposing the EU’s policies on migration, LGBT rights and climate change, among other things. The bloc has been blaming the current Polish leadership for eroding the checks and balances within the judiciary in the Eastern European country of 38 million as well as trying to take the justice system under political control.

Alexander De Croo, the prime minister of Belgium –one of EU’s founding members– also addressed the ongoing dispute with Poland on Wednesday, saying “you can’t pocket all the money but refuse the values.”

He also responded to the recent comments by Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki, who suggested that the EU may well start “a third World War” over its differences with Poland and vowed that his country would defend its rights “with any weapons which are at our disposal” if this happens.

According to De Croo, his Polish counterpart was “playing with fire when waging war with your European colleagues for internal political reasons.”

David Beckham Signs ‘£15m-a-year Deal With Qatar To Become Face of 2022 World Cup’

The English football icon has penned a mega-money deal that will see him pocket £150m over the course of the next ten years to become an ambassador for Qatar ahead of next year’s World Cup.

David Beckham is set to be named as the face of the 2022 Qatar World Cup next month – making a staggering £150m in the process.

It has been reported the former Manchester United star has agreed a deal thought to be worth £15m-a-year over the next ten years to act as an ambassador for Qatar.

The ex- England captain has already spent time in the country, flying into the capital Doha earlier this month to spend seven days meeting dignitaries and visiting stadia ahead of the tournament in just over 12 months time.

The deal is likely to spark controversy given the country’s human rights record and views towards members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Beckham has reportedly been informed that fans attending the spectacle next December will be allowed to display rainbow flags in stadiums and be kept safe throughout the tournament.

David Beckham will earn £150m over the next ten years from his role as an ambassador for Qatar.

Laws in Qatar render homosexuality illegal, though the actual application of the law is thought to have become more progressive in recent years.

Beckham has already entertained a relationship with the Qatari state stemming from his time at Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain, he will be expected to promote tourism and celebrate the nations cultural heritage.

The former Three Lions legend apparently mulled over the decision with the support of his pop star-turned fashion mogul wife Victoria, formerly of the Spice Girls.

“David believes in Qatar’s commitment to progress and that the World Cup — the first to be held in the Arab world — can effect significant positive change.

“He strongly believes in the power of football to bridge differences but, crucially, has seen the progress on issues that matter.

“By signing David, the hope is more westerners will be encouraged to see its beautiful beaches, vast expanses of sand dunes and incredible skyscrapers.”

A spokesperson for the former LA Galaxy midfielder explained: “David has always talked about the power of football as a force for good on many levels.

“As we reach the one year to go point he will join the wider football community that is coming together for the World Cup 2022 and he’s looking forward to what he thinks will be a great tournament.”

The decision to hand Qatar the 2022 World Cup remains a talking point more than ten years after it was awarded to them.

Accusations of bribery and shady deals have plagued the nations successful bid.

Football’s world governing body FIFA are currently under fire for their proposals to stage a World Cup tournament every two years, rather than the current format of every four.

Japan’s Princess Forgoes $1.3M And Her Royal Status To Marry University Sweetheart

Japan’s Princess marries boyfriend, loses royal status. Mako Komuro exits imperial family by marrying university sweetheart, and will forego lump-sum payment of $1.3M.

Princess Mako of Japan’s imperial family married her “commoner” boyfriend on Tuesday, losing her royal status.

Mako married her university sweetheart Kei Komuro, both 30, and Japan’s Imperial Household Agency submitted the legal paperwork in capital Tokyo to register their marriage, Kyodo News reported.

Niece of Emperor Naruhito, Princess Mako now became Mako Komuro under family registry with Komuro who called her marriage a “necessary choice” for her.

Mako is the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Fumihito, the younger brother of Emperor Naruhito. Mako’s parents and younger sister saw her off when she left the family’s residence in the Akasaka Estate in Tokyo.

The couple first met in 2012 and has been in a relationship since their schooling at the International Christian University in Tokyo. They were unofficially engaged in 2017 but the marriage was postponed due to a financial dispute involving Komuro’s mother.

Komuro has said he was “trying to settle a financial dispute involving his mother.”

Japan’s imperial agency had earlier this month announced a date for their marriage following which Komuro returned from New York where he works for a law firm.

The duo plan to settle down in the US after the former princess receives her passport.

Japan’s imperial family does not need travel documents for travel, however, if a female member decides to marry outside, she loses the status and has to formally apply for travel documents.

Soon after their restricted marriage ceremony was held, Mako and Komuro opted to only give opening remarks during a news conference and released answers to five selected questions.

The imperial agency had revealed that Mako has been “diagnosed with complex post-traumatic stress disorder caused by what is claimed to be mental abuse”, blaming the excessive media coverage around the princess and Komuro’s family in the past few years.

The wedding ceremony was held without the related ritual ceremonies, making Mako the first female member of the royal family to skip the traditions after World War II.

By marrying an outsider, Mako lost her royal status but is entitled to a lump-sum payment of about $1.3 million from the imperial family.

However, the princess has indicated she will not take the money, making her the first Japanese royal to forego such an offer.

Nigerian Government Launch eNaira Digital Currency

Nigeria officially launch eNaira, the digital currency that is said to boost Nigeria’s GDP by $29 billion in 10 years.

The adoption of the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) and its underlying technology, called block chain, can increase Nigeria’s GDP by $29billion over the next 10 years, President Muhammadu Buhari said Monday in Abuja at the official launch of the eNaira.

The President also declared that the introduction of the eNaira would enable the government to send direct payments to citizens eligible for specific welfare programmes as well as foster cross border trade.

He said alongside digital innovations, CBDCs can foster economic growth through better economic activities, increase remittances, improve financial inclusion and make monetary policy more effective.

”Let me note that aside from the global trend to create Digital Currencies, we believe that there are Nigeria-specific benefits that cut across different sectors of, and concerns of the economy.

”The use of CBDCs can help move many more people and businesses from the informal into the formal sector, thereby increasing the tax base of the country,” he said.

The President said with the launch of eNaira, Nigeria has become the first country in Africa, and one of the first in the world to introduce a Digital Currency to her citizens.

He commended the Governor of the Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, his deputies and the entire team of staff who worked tirelessly to make the launch of Africa’s first digital currency a reality.

The President, who assured Nigerians of the safety and scalability of the CBDC system, said the journey to create a digital currency for Nigeria began sometime in 2017.

”Work intensified over the past several months with several brainstorming exercises, deployment of technical partners and advisers, collaboration with the Ministries of Communication and Digital Economy and its sister agencies like the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), integration of banking software across the country and painstaking tests to ensure the robustness, safety and scalability of the CBDC System,” he said.

The President also explained to Nigerians why he approved the use of the digital currency.

”In recent times, the use of physical cash in conducting business and making payments has been on the decline. This trend has been exacerbated by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resurgence of a new Digital Economy.

”Alongside these developments, businesses, households, and other economic agents have sought for new means of making payments in the new circumstances.

”The absence of a swift and effective solution to these requirements, as well as fears that Central Banks’ actions sometimes lead to hyperinflation created the space for non-government entities to establish new forms of “private currencies” that seemed to have gained popularity and acceptance across the world, including here in Nigeria.

”In response to these developments, an overwhelming majority of Central Banks across the world have started to consider issuing digital currencies in order to cater for businesses and households seeking faster, safer, easier and cheaper means of payments.

”A handful of countries including China, Bahamas, and Cambodia have already issued their own CBDCs. A 2021 survey of Central Banks around the world by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) found that almost 90 per cent are actively researching the potential for CBDCs, 60 percent were experimenting with the technology and 14 per cent were deploying pilot projects.

”Needless to add, close monitoring and close supervision will be necessary in the early stages of implementation to study the effect of eNaira on the economy as a whole.

”It is on the basis of this that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) sought and received my approval to explore issuing Nigeria’s own Central Bank Digital Currency, named the eNaira,’’ he said.

The President said his approval was also underpinned by the fact that the CBN has been a leading innovator ‘‘in the form of money they produce, and in the payment services they deploy for efficient transactions.’’

He said Nigeria’s apex bank has invested heavily in creating a Payment System that is ranked in the top ten in the world and certainly the best in Africa.

”This payment system now provides high‐value and time‐critical payment services to financial institutions, and ultimately serves as the backbone for every electronic payment in Nigeria.

”They have also supported several private‐sector initiatives to improve the existing payments landscape, and in turn, have created some of the world’s leading payment service providers today,’’ he said.

In his remarks, the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Mr Godwin Emefiele explained that eNaira is Nigeria’s CBDC and it is the digital equivalent of the physical Naira.

”As the tagline simply encapsulates, the eNaira is the same Naira with far more possibilities. The eNaira – like the physical Naira – is a legal tender in Nigeria and a liability of the CBN. The eNaira and Naira will have the same value and will always be exchanged at 1 naira to 1 eNaira,” he said.

He said the CBN has given careful consideration to the entire payments and financial architecture and has designed the eNaira to complement and strengthen these ecosystems and has implemented secure safeguards and policies to maintain the integrity of the financial system.

He pledged that there would be strict adherence to the anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) standards in order to preserve the integrity and stability of Nigeria’s payment system.

According to him, since the eNaira platform went live, there has been overwhelming interest and encouraging response from Nigerians and other parties across the world with over 2.5 million daily visits to the website.

He listed the following milestones: “33 banks are fully integrated and live on the platform, 500 million has been successfully minted by the Bank, N200 million has been issued to financial institutions, over 2,000 customers have been onboarded and over 120 merchants have successfully registered on the eNaira platform.”

The CBN governor also used the occasion to commend President Buhari for making history, yet again, with the launch of the eNaira – the first in Africa and one of the earliest around the world.

He also dispelled fears on the nation’s foreign reserves, saying the reserves are strong and getting stronger by the day.

”Mr. President, as you make ground breaking reforms, there have been continuing debate on the true value of the Naira. Rather than worry today on the direction of the exchange rate, let us take a step back and analyze how we got here in the first place.

”Please recall that since the advent of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) led Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) in 1986, and the introduction of the Second Tier Foreign Exchange (SFEM) market, the Naira has been on a one-way free fall from parity to the US Dollar in 1984 to over N410/USD today.

”Some 35 years later, we have not been able to achieve the many promises and objectives of that programme.

”Instead, what we have seen is widespread import dependency, which has wiped out most of our production and manufacturing bases and exported all our jobs in the process.
”What has happened to the massive textile factories across our nation such that we import almost all cotton products when we are rich in cotton?

”What has happened to our vehicle assembly plants across the nation such that we import most vehicles and have become a massive dumping ground for dying second-hand vehicles?
”What has happened to our rubber plantations through which we made the best tyres and rubber products in the world? What has happened to our groundnut pyramids? What has happened to our Cocoa farms? What has happened to our palm oil mills?

”Under your leadership, Mr. President, we must stop this decline for good! We must return to massive homemade production; we must get our people working again. We must create the economic environment for massive domestic production and significant non-oil exports.

”As custodians of your national reserves, let me first assure you that there is no cause for alarm. Our FX reserves are strong and indeed getting stronger by the day, crossing the 40 billion USD mark, and is one of the highest in Africa – and growing.

”But we cannot fritter our reserves away on cheap imports and currency speculators. We must return to an employment-led growth anchored on productivity and rewarding producers of local goods, services, innovation and new technologies.

”If you consume cheap imports and export our jobs, we will make you pay dearly; but if you produce locally – with little or no foreign inputs beyond machinery, we will support you, and the markets will reward you abundantly,” he said.

In addition to all policies and actions of the CBN to support the economy especially through the trying times of COVID-19, Emefiele announced a new financial instrument titled “The 100 for 100 PPP – Policy on Production and Productivity,” which will be anchored in the Development Finance Department under his direct supervision.

He explained that under this policy the CBN would advertise, screen, scrutinize and financially support 100 targeted private sector companies in 100 days, beginning from 01 November 2021, and rolling over every 100 days with new set of 100 companies, whose names will be published in National Dailies for Nigerians to verify and confirm.

Pablo Picasso Artworks Sell For Over $100 Million

After spending years at Las Vegas hotel, eleven Pablo Picasso artworks have sold at auction for nearly 110 million US dollars (£80 million).

The Sotheby’s auction took place at the MGM Resorts-owned Bellagio hotel and casino, where the pieces featured in its Picasso restaurant.

The company said Saturday’s sale, which exceeded its high estimate with all of the works sold, would help it improve the diversity of its fine art collection.

The highest price was fetched by the 1938 portrait Femme Au Beret Rouge-Orange, which depicts Picasso’s muse and lover Marie-Therese Walter, which sold for 40.5 million dollars (£29 million) following what auctioneers described as a “prolonged bidding battle”.

It exceeded its high guide price by some 10 million dollars.

The two-metre tall Homme Et Enfant sold for 24.4 million dollars (£17 million). The 1959 piece is regarded as an important example of Picasso’s late career work.

The Bellagio ballroom featured a recreated version of the Sotheby’s auction room for the sale, which was hosted by the house’s chairman and auctioneer Oliver Barker.

Brooke Lampley, Sotheby’s chairman and worldwide head of sales for global fine art, said: “When we announced this unique collaboration with MGM Resorts a few months ago, there was an immediate buzz about this special auction.

“Tonight’s tremendous results only underscore the singular nature of this event, and the importance of creating bespoke experiences that cater to furthering our commitment to existing clients, as well as opening doors for a whole new audience to engage with Sotheby’s.”

The MGM Resorts collection was started more than 20 years ago by US property developer and casino mogul Steve Wynn, former owner of the Bellagio.

Tesla’s Bitcoin Possessions Hits a Billion Dollars in Profits For The Company

Tesla has distributed its Q3 profit, announcing a $51 million debilitation charge on its Bitcoin property last quarter. In the course of the last year, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has been a vocal attendant of crypto on Twitter. He consistently siphons Dogecoin, and on February 8 this year, Tesla declared it had put precisely $1.5 billion in Bitcoin. In the language of bookkeeping, a debilitation charge is a figure given to portray a decrease in the recoverable worth of a decent resource.

Decreases can occur if the resource is harmed (on account of valuable actual resources), or on account of unpredictable digital resources like crypto, if the value drops.

No, you do not. I have not sold any of my Bitcoin. Tesla sold 10% of its holdings essentially to prove liquidity of Bitcoin as an alternative to holding cash on balance sheet.

Around then, the cost of Bitcoin was barely short of $59,000, demonstrating that Tesla holds around 42,000 Bitcoin. The documenting revealed that the “conveying esteem” (the first value it paid) for Tesla’s Bitcoin possessions before the finish of Q1 was $1.33 billion, showing a sell of $170 million worth of Bitcoin, passing via conveying esteem.

Be that as it may, this is crypto, and qualities can waver fiercely starting with one month then onto the next. In the SEC document, Tesla uncovered it got a $101 million “positive effect,” or benefit, from its offer of 10% of its possessions before the finish of March, implying that the financial worth of the Bitcoin sold at the time was more than $270 million.

In this way, if the holding esteem of Tesla’s Bitcoin after the deal is $1.33 billion and it has around 42,000 Bitcoin left, the value it initially paid for them arrived at the midpoint of around $31,620. In the midst of the current week’s new highs, one Bitcoin is worth around $63,500 today, implying that Tesla holds more than $2.67 billion in Bitcoin, an increment of in excess of a billion dollars since Q1.

Putin Defends Biden’s Decision to Withdraw Troops From Afghanistan

Vladimir Putin, the Russian President has said that Joe Biden was right to take American troops out of Afghanistan but criticized the “mess” that the U.S. withdrawal left behind.

Moscow has been seeking to expand its influence in Afghanistan following the seizure of power by the Taliban and the exit of most western diplomats from Kabul.

On Wednesday, a Taliban delegation took part in talks in the Russian capital about the future of the country under the so-called Moscow format, which includes India, Iran, China and Pakistan.

During a question and answer session after his speech at the Valdai Discussion Club in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Putin backed Biden’s decision over the controversial U.S. withdrawal.

“Of course, the President of the United States…did the right thing to withdraw his troops from Afghanistan,” Putin told the forum on Thursday, according to a transcript on the Kremlin website.

Putin said Biden “probably understood” even if he did not know “in detail” that he would face criticism domestically for the move, but “he went for it, accepted it and took on this responsibility.

“He did the right thing in deciding to withdraw troops but now, of course, we all need to look to the future.”

Putin said that “the main responsibility” for the current chaos in Afghanistan was held by “those countries that fought there for 20 years.”

“The first thing they should have done, in my opinion, is to unfreeze Afghan assets and enable Afghanistan to tackle socio-economic problems of paramount importance,” he added.

Earlier during his main speech, Putin criticized western liberalism and advances in gay and transgender rights.

He called on Russians to “rely on our own spiritual values, our historical tradition and the culture of our multi-ethnic nation,” in comments made available in English on the Kremlin website.

He said that transgender rights supporters were demanding an end to “the traditional notions of mother, father, family and even gender.”

He also referred to it being “truly monstrous” when children “are taught from an early age that a boy can easily become a girl and vice versa.”

Response To Energy Price Spike, Gets EU Leaders Debating

EU leaders on Thursday struggled to agree a common response to soaring energy prices, which have exposed familiar rifts over the bloc’s climate change goals and divided countries on whether the price crunch warrants an overhaul of EU energy market rules.

The European Commission last week published a “toolbox” outlining the national measures governments can take and said Brussels would look into longer-term options to address price shocks.

EU leaders debated those options on Thursday, but halted the talks after a few hours and planned to return to the issue after a debate on the deepening row between the EU and Poland over the rule of law.

Countries are split over how the EU should tackle soaring energy prices, as their citizens face higher bills with winter approaching.

Most EU countries have already drawn up emergency action plans to shield consumers, including energy tax cuts and subsidies for poorer households.

A draft of their summit conclusions, seen by Reuters, invites countries to urgently use the toolbox “to provide short-term relief to the most vulnerable consumers and to support European companies”.

Longer-term measures, however, are more contentious. One EU diplomat said a sticking point in Thursday’s talks was some countries’ demands that the EU overhaul its carbon market.

Poland and the Czech Republic have asked the EU to limit financial speculators’ participation in the carbon market, which they say said has helped push CO2 prices to record highs.

Brussels has previously resisted such calls, warning that intervening in the scheme would erode trust in the market. Countries including Germany and the Netherlands have warned against intervention, while other states are wary of overhauling regulations in response to a short-term crisis.

European gas prices have hit record highs as tight supply has collided with economies emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic, amid surging CO2 prices and lower-than-expected gas deliveries from Russia. The Commission said gas prices were expected to stabilise at a lower level by April.

Spain, Italy and Greece are also pushing for an EU response to the price spike, including by launching joint gas buying among EU countries to form strategic reserves.

The draft conclusions for the summit did not endorse any specific actions, suggesting leaders will pass the issue on to an emergency meeting of EU energy ministers on Oct. 26.

A preparatory note ahead of that meeting, seen by Reuters, said ministers would debate “what further measures at EU and Member State level, including the use of EU financial tools, could be envisaged”.

The price spike has also stoked familiar tensions over the EU’s policies to fight climate change, with Poland calling for Brussels to change or delay some planned green measures.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Thursday dismissed EU climate policy plans as a “utopian fantasy”. That view is at odds with other countries that say high gas prices should speed up Europe’s shift to renewable energy to reduce countries’ exposure to volatile fossil fuel prices.

Bill Clinton Continues To Recover

Bill Clinton ‘touched by outpouring of support’ as he continues recovery.

Former US president Bill Clinton has released a video saying he is on the road to recovery after being admitted to hospital in California for six days to treat an infection unrelated to Covid-19.

The 75-year-old, who arrived on Sunday at his home in New York, said in the video that he was glad to be back home and that he was “so touched by the outpouring of support” he received while in hospital last week.

An aide to Mr Clinton said the former president had a urological infection that spread to his bloodstream but was on the mend and never went into septic shock, a potentially life-threatening condition.

Mr Clinton also thanked the doctors and nurses at the University of California Irvine Medical Centre in Orange, California.
