Maryland woman charged with killing 92-year-old housemate.

A 26-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday after allegedly confessing to killing her elderly roommate in Maryland.

Julia Birch was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 92-year-old Nancy Ann Frankel, Montgomery County police said. Officers responded to a 911 call at about 8:20 a.m. Wednesday morning at the home in Kensington.

During an interview with police, Birch allegedly confessed to killing Frankel and calling police after. The two women were roommates, according to police.

Officers found evidence at the residence that supported Birch’s statement and she was subsequently arrested, according to Montgomery police. An autopsy is being conducted on Frankel to determine cause of death.

Birch is being held without bail, and it is unclear whether she has retained an attorney based on court records. She has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 27.

World Bank says 50% of Nigerian youths want to leave the country.

This was disclosed by the World Bank in a study titled “Of Roads Less Traveled: Assessing the Potential for Migration to Provide Overseas Jobs for Nigeria’s Youth,” which was released this week on its website.

Nigeria placed third in West Africa among the nations polled, trailing only Liberia (70 percent) and Sierra Leone (60 percent) in terms of respondents who would relocate permanently to another country.

“With rising migratory pressures created by poor employment conditions, Nigerians are increasingly choosing to migrate through irregular means,” the Bank stated.

The study said Nigerians were the largest group of migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa coming in Europe in 2016 and 2017, with almost 40,000 landing in Italy in 2016, with over 90% arriving by sea.

“A greater proportion of Nigerian migrants arriving in Italy were women (32 percent) than migrants from the rest of SSA (24 percent),” the banks stated

Part of the report also revealed that while the number of asylum seekers from Nigeria has declined in recent years, this does not translate as decreased demand for migration from Nigeria. The drop in migration levels from Nigeria and other Sub-Saharan African countries to Europe is a result of tighter border control policies supported by the EU in transit countries such as Libya and Niger.

“However, the underlying economic and demographic factors that create migratory pressures are unlikely to subside in the near future, with other potential irregular routes being reported through Sudan and Chad to Libya” it noted.

Hong Kong police makes arrest and claims children’s tales of sheep and wolves incite sedition

Hong Kong police arrested five people on Thursday on sedition charges, saying that children’s books they had published featuring wolves and sheep as characters were aimed at inciting hatred towards the city’s government amongst youngsters.

The arrests were the latest involving suspected critics of Hong Kong’s government that have raised fears about the shrinking space for dissent since Beijing imposed a national security law in June 2020 to put an end to pro-democracy protests in the semi-autonomous city.

Police said one book, “Defenders of the Sheep Village,” was connected to the protests. In the story, wolves want to occupy the village and eat the sheep, who in turn use their horns to fight back.

Those arrested were members of a speech therapists’ union who produced books for children. Police said the five were two men and three women aged between 25 and 28. They did not identify them by name.

The five were arrested on suspicion of conspiring to publish seditious material under a colonial-era law which had been rarely used before the anti-government protests began in the former British colony.

Senior police superintendent Steve Li told a media briefing that police were concerned by the books because of the information inside for children which “turns their mind and develop a moral standard to be against society.”

The second told the story of 12 sheep taken by wolves to the beasts’ village where they would be cooked, potentially alluding to the 12 Hong Kong people captured by China in August last year at sea as they tried to flee the city by boat. Li said the story was not factual and incited hatred against authorities.

The third book tells the story of wolves sneaking through a hole into the sheep village and shows the wolves as dirty and the sheep as clean. This aimed to create hatred against the government, Li said.

First convictions under the sedition law can carry a maximum penalty of two years in prison, police said. The General Union of Hong Kong Speech Therapists could not be reached for comment.

Barrack arrested on foreign-agent charges

Former Trump campaign adviser Tom Barrack was arrested today and charged with acting as a foreign agent of the United Arab Emirates between 2016 and 2018. According to an indictment unsealed this afternoon in a federal court in Brooklyn, Barrack, while serving as a foreign policy adviser to former President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, inserted pro-UAE language into a campaign speech, and took direction from UAE officials about what to say in media appearances and in a 2016 op-ed he wrote. In addition to foreign lobbying charges, Barrack has also been charged with obstruction of justice and lying to federal investigators.

— He also allegedly agreed to promote a candidate backed by the UAE for the post of ambassador to the gulf nation while providing “non-public information about the views and reactions of senior U.S. government officials following a White House meeting between senior U.S. officials and senior UAE officials” to Rashid Alshahhi, a UAE citizen who was also charged with acting as an unregistered foreign agent. Matthew Grimes, an aide to Barrack at his investment firm Colony Capital, has also been charged with acting as an unregistered foreign agent, according to the indictment. According to a press release from the Justice Department, both Barrack and Grimes were arrested in Los Angeles this morning and were to be arraigned this afternoon.

While the pandemic didn’t completely prompt the rebranding, it did accelerate many of the conditions that led to it, Tom McGee, ICSC’s president told PI. — The ICSC will also broaden its advocacy efforts to reflect its new brand. “I think that sometimes the phraseology shopping center got misinterpreted to be very singularly focused,” McGee said. The group, which shelled out $2.5 million on lobbying last year, according to OpenSecrets.org, will also lobby on issues relating to small business and economic development. That includes, McGee said, trying to prevent the elimination of several tax provisions Democrats are taking aim at in infrastructure talks. The ICSC is also pushing for more relief programs to help “micro small businesses” such as nail salons, dry cleaners and fitness centers that have not had as much access to programs like PPP. Targeted grant funds like those set up for restaurants and live entertainment venues “were good programs but there’s still a lot of pain in the small business community,” he said.

EU prepare to hit Lebanon’s leaders over political crisis

Political crisis has left the country without a functioning government since the last one resigned after a massive explosion killed dozens and destroyed swathes of Beirut in August 2020.

EU foreign ministers agreed to move ahead towards sanctions against Lebanon’s ruling elite over the political crisis wracking the country.

EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Monday said top diplomats from the bloc’s 27 nations gave the green light at a meeting in Brussels to establish a legal framework for measures against Lebanese leaders who have driven their nation into economic collapse.

“The objective is to complete this by the end of the month,” Borrell said.

A political crisis has left the country without a functioning government since the last one resigned after a massive explosion killed dozens and destroyed swathes of Beirut in August 2020.

“The economy’s imploding and the suffering of the people of Lebanon is continuously growing,” Borrell said.

“They need to have a Lebanese government in order to avoid the breakdown of the country, (one that is) fully able to implement reforms and protect this population.”

Lebanon is mired in what the World Bank has called one of the worst economic crises since the 1850s, and the cash-strapped state is struggling to buy enough fuel to keep the lights on.

The economic crisis has seen the Lebanese pound lose more than 90 percent of its value against the dollar on the black market, and left more than half the population living below the poverty line.

In April, France imposed sanctions by restricting entry of Lebanese figures it says are responsible for the political crisis.

Messi finally wins his first International trophy with Argentina

Lionel Messi finally wins a trophy with his country. Despite his storied career, there had long been something missing for the world’s biggest soccer superstar as the 34-year-old had never been able to win a major international title with his native Argentina. That all ended Saturday night when Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 at the Copa América final in Rio de Janeiro. And while Argentina celebrated its first major international victory since 1993, it seemed everyone was really happy for Messi, who was finally able to celebrate with his teammates after years of crushing disappointments.

The victory was undoubtedly made sweeter by the location. Argentina beat its historic rival Brazil in the iconic Maracanã stadium, the site of what was perhaps Messi’s most disappointing defeat in 2014, when Argentina lost against Germany in the World Cup final. Video of Messi calling his family from the middle of the pitch quickly went viral. “I won, I won!” he could be heard saying on the call as he showed off his golden medal. “I needed to remove the thorn of being able to achieve something with the national team,” Messi said in the dressing room after the victory. “I had been close for other years and I knew it was going to happen. I am grateful to God for giving me this moment, against Brazil and in Brazil. I was saving this moment for myself.” Messi was named player of the tournament with four goals and five assists.

Messi also received lots of praise from Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni, who said the team captain had played in the final with an injury. “If you knew the way that he played in the Copa América you’d love him even more,” Scaloni told reporters. “You can never do without a player like him, even when he is not fully fit like in this game and the previous one.”

The final marked the end of a tournament that had been plagued by controversy before it even began. The Copa América had been scheduled to be played in Colombia and Argentina. Colombia was removed as a host because of ongoing political violence. And shortly before the tournament was scheduled to start, Argentina bowed out from hosting it amid a surge in COVID-19 cases and deaths. That left organizers scrambling and Brazil offered to host the tournament even though it has suffered the second-highest COVID-19 death toll in the world after the United States. The pandemic seemed to be the furthest thing from the minds of the thousands of people who gathered to celebrate into the early hours of Sunday morning in downtown Buenos Aires.

The Swiss was hoping to win his ninth Wimbledon title and there is concern that he will not get another chance now.

Federer’s last Grand Slam success was the 2018 Australian Open, where he beat Marin Cilic to win his 20th Slam title.

Mysterious Teenager found guilty of murdering sisters

A ‘mysteriously evil’ 19-year-old teenager has been found guilty of murdering two sisters as they celebrated a birthday in a London park.

Danyal Hussein repeatedly stabbed Bibaa Henry, 46, and sister Nicole Smallman, 27, in Fryent Country Park, Wembley, as part of a ‘demonic pact’ to win the lottery.

Ms Henry, a social worker from Brent, and photographer Miss Smallman, from Harrow, had met with friends in the park to celebrate the former’s birthday in June last year.

Hussein fatally attacked the women in the early hours of the morning, before hiding their intertwined bodies in the bushes. They were found the following morning by Miss Smallman’s boyfriend during a family search for the missing women.

Jurors were told that the sisters’ killings were at the heart of a ‘twisted deal’ Hussein made with an imaginary demon, promising to kill six women every six months in exchange for winning the Mega Millions Super Jackpot of £321 million.

Hussein bought a set of knives at Asda and used his own blood to sign the so-called agreement with mythical demon Lucifuge Rofocale, before stalking and fatally stabbing Ms Henry and Miss Smallman.

Police did not rule out that racism played a part in the way the killer chose the victims, despite referring to only ‘women’ in his demonic plot.

A jury today found Hussein guilty of two counts of murder and possession of a knife after eight hours of deliberation.

In a victim impact statement read to court, the sisters’ mother Mina Smallman said: ‘No one expects their children to die before them but to have two of your three children murdered overnight is just incomprehensible.’

She added: ‘If any good comes out of this, at least another four women will not meet a similar end in a so-called pact with a so-called demon.’

Separately, the Independent Office of Police Complaints (IOPC) is investigating the Met Police’s response to the missing persons reports of Ms Henry and Miss Smallman.

Two police constables have also been charged with misconduct in public office after they allegedly shared pictures of the crime scene on WhatsApp. They are due to enter their pleas later this month.

Referring to the investigations while speaking outside the Old Bailey following the verdict today, Mrs Smallman said: ‘This is an unbelievable day for us but it’s the first, and there are two more battles to go.
