Maryland woman charged with killing 92-year-old housemate.

A 26-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday after allegedly confessing to killing her elderly roommate in Maryland.

Julia Birch was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 92-year-old Nancy Ann Frankel, Montgomery County police said. Officers responded to a 911 call at about 8:20 a.m. Wednesday morning at the home in Kensington.

During an interview with police, Birch allegedly confessed to killing Frankel and calling police after. The two women were roommates, according to police.

Officers found evidence at the residence that supported Birch’s statement and she was subsequently arrested, according to Montgomery police. An autopsy is being conducted on Frankel to determine cause of death.

Birch is being held without bail, and it is unclear whether she has retained an attorney based on court records. She has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 27.

World Bank says 50% of Nigerian youths want to leave the country.

This was disclosed by the World Bank in a study titled “Of Roads Less Traveled: Assessing the Potential for Migration to Provide Overseas Jobs for Nigeria’s Youth,” which was released this week on its website.

Nigeria placed third in West Africa among the nations polled, trailing only Liberia (70 percent) and Sierra Leone (60 percent) in terms of respondents who would relocate permanently to another country.

A larger number of young Nigerians are looking to leave the country in search of a brighter economic future.

“With rising migratory pressures created by poor employment conditions, Nigerians are increasingly choosing to migrate through irregular means,” the Bank stated.

The study said Nigerians were the largest group of migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa coming in Europe in 2016 and 2017, with almost 40,000 landing in Italy in 2016, with over 90% arriving by sea.

“A greater proportion of Nigerian migrants arriving in Italy were women (32 percent) than migrants from the rest of SSA (24 percent),” the banks stated

Part of the report also revealed that while the number of asylum seekers from Nigeria has declined in recent years, this does not translate as decreased demand for migration from Nigeria. The drop in migration levels from Nigeria and other Sub-Saharan African countries to Europe is a result of tighter border control policies supported by the EU in transit countries such as Libya and Niger.

“However, the underlying economic and demographic factors that create migratory pressures are unlikely to subside in the near future, with other potential irregular routes being reported through Sudan and Chad to Libya” it noted.

Popular Chinese app WeChat suspends new registrations

In a social media post, Tencent-owned WeChat, known as Weixin in China, said the suspension was related to an upgrade of security technology “according to relevant laws and regulations”

Tech giant Tencent Holdings’ WeChat, China’s most popular messaging app, said it was suspending registration of new users in mainland China until early August as it was undergoing a technical upgrade.

The development comes amid a widening crackdown by Chinese regulators on technology and private tutoring companies.

In a social media post, WeChat, known as Weixin in China, said the suspension was related to an upgrade of security technology “according to relevant laws and regulations”.

“During this time, registration of new Weixin personal and official accounts has been temporarily suspended. Registration services will be restored after the upgrade is complete, which is expected in early August,” it said.

It did not elaborate on either the upgrade or what the laws or regulations were.

Tencent’s stocks in Hong Kong went down by nearly 9% on Tuesday, its worst day in a decade, reports said.

Recently, cab-hailing giant Didi suspended registration of new users after several departments of the Chinese government launched an investigation into alleged misuse of private data.

Earlier, ecommerce giant Alibaba faced investigations for alleged monopolistic behaviour.

The app says it has around 1.2 billion users worldwide with the majority of users on the Chinese mainland.

Hundreds of millions of people in China use the app to message friends, make payments, book taxis, and share highlights of their lives under a category of update called “moments”.

Since its launch about a decade ago, the app has come to occupy a central place in the social media lives of Chinese citizens not only in China, but among the diaspora in the world.

Its use became even more widespread through the launch of mini-programmes that allow users to carry out a wide range of functions such as paying utility bills.

In January this year, reports said WeChat’s brand value increased 25% to $67.9 billion.

Beijing-based tech consultant Zhou Zhanggui told Reuters that investors were over-reacting to the “rectification” of Chinese tech companies.

“The suspension of new user registrations on WeChat has no substantial impact on Tencent in the short term,” Zhou said

Samoa First Elected Female PM finally takes office.

More than three months after winning an election which sparked a constitutional crisis, Samoa’s first female prime minister was finally able to take office on Tuesday.

A smiling Fiame Naomi Mata’afa sat in the chair her predecessor had been reluctant to relinquish after 22 years in power. She held her first Cabinet meeting, with members of her FAST Party dressed in the distinctive red clothes that party members and supporters often wear.

Fiame, 64, said they were ready to begin their work.

That could include a reset of the island nation’s relationship with China. On the campaign trail, Fiame had pledged to stop a $100 million port development backed by Beijing, calling the project excessive for a nation that’s already heavily in debt to China.

After a knife-edge election result in April, Fiame’s predecessor Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi refused to concede defeat, despite several court rulings that went against him.

Tuilaepa had two powerful allies in the nation’s head of state and the speaker, who were able to stall the transfer of power.

A bizarre scene played out in May when Fiame and her party were locked out of the Parliament, with Tuilaepa claiming he was still in charge. Both sides accused each other of trying to stage a coup.

Fiame and her party members took oaths and appointed ministers in a ceremony held under a tent in front of the locked Parliament.

In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Fiame said that day was charged with emotion.

“It could have gone pear-shaped, but we were able to keep calm,” she said. “We could have stormed the building and knocked down the doors, like in Washington, D.C. But we just sat and sang a few hymns, sang a prayer.”

Last week, the nation’s top court ruled the unusual swearing-in ceremony that day had been constitutional, and Tuilaepa finally conceded.

Fiame had previously served as Tuilaepa’s deputy.

She said in the interview that she resigned after becoming concerned that Tuilaepa and fellow lawmakers had gone “off the rails” by trying to politically intervene in the nation’s court system and judiciary.

“It was a classic case of power and corruption,” Fiame said. “We were slipping away from the rule of law, and I didn’t like that. But most of party were happy to go along with it.”

She said Tuilaepa never thought he could lose the election, particularly given his huge parliamentary majority leading up to it.

“He was in shock and deep denial,” she said.

Fiame’s election win is seen as a milestone not only for Samoa, which is conservative and Christian, but also for the South Pacific, which has had few female leaders.

Fiame said she didn’t think her gender was a big issue in the election, and that her role in the traditional chiefly system was perhaps more important to voters. But she hoped that she might be a positive role model for Pacific women in other fields, showing what they could achieve.

Lauren James’ Chelsea move is officially confirmed

Lauren James’ Chelsea move is officially confirmed as 19-year-old makes record-breaking £200,000 WSL switch from Manchester United to join brother Reece in west London.

The 19-year-old, sister of England and Chelsea right-back Reece, has joined in a move worth up to £200,000, which is a record between two Women’s Super League clubs.

She joins a Chelsea side that won the WSL and League Cup last season, as well as reaching the final of the Champions League where they lost to Barcelona.

The teenager had a stint in the youth ranks at Chelsea, before making her breakthrough into first-team football at Arsenal, and spoke of her excitement after the move was confirmed.

James said: ‘It’s a great feeling to come back home, to a great club, the club I started at the age of six.

‘To be able to play for the first team now and come back here to Emma and the rest of the group is a great feeling.

She scored 14 goals in 18 league appearances to help United first get promoted to the WSL, before finishing their first season in the top-flight as the club’s top scorer.

‘Lauren is an exciting, young talent who we have admired for a while,’ Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said.

‘When the opportunity came up to sign her, we felt now was the right time to bring her back to the club.

US-China Tension intensifies as China imposes counter-sanctions on ex-US commerce secretary Ross, others

China said on Friday that it has imposed counter-sanctions on U.S. individuals including former U.S. commerce secretary Wilbur Ross in response to U.S. sanctions on Chinese officials with Beijing’s liaison office in Hong Kong.

The sanctions are the first imposed by China under its new anti-foreign sanction law, passed in June, and come days before U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman is due to visit China amid deeply strained ties.

Hong Kong police makes arrest and claims children’s tales of sheep and wolves incite sedition

Hong Kong police arrested five people on Thursday on sedition charges, saying that children’s books they had published featuring wolves and sheep as characters were aimed at inciting hatred towards the city’s government amongst youngsters.

The arrests were the latest involving suspected critics of Hong Kong’s government that have raised fears about the shrinking space for dissent since Beijing imposed a national security law in June 2020 to put an end to pro-democracy protests in the semi-autonomous city.

Police said one book, “Defenders of the Sheep Village,” was connected to the protests. In the story, wolves want to occupy the village and eat the sheep, who in turn use their horns to fight back.

Those arrested were members of a speech therapists’ union who produced books for children. Police said the five were two men and three women aged between 25 and 28. They did not identify them by name.

The five were arrested on suspicion of conspiring to publish seditious material under a colonial-era law which had been rarely used before the anti-government protests began in the former British colony.

Senior police superintendent Steve Li told a media briefing that police were concerned by the books because of the information inside for children which “turns their mind and develop a moral standard to be against society.”

They highlighted two other books produced by the union in addition to “Defenders of the Sheep Village.”

The second told the story of 12 sheep taken by wolves to the beasts’ village where they would be cooked, potentially alluding to the 12 Hong Kong people captured by China in August last year at sea as they tried to flee the city by boat. Li said the story was not factual and incited hatred against authorities.

The third book tells the story of wolves sneaking through a hole into the sheep village and shows the wolves as dirty and the sheep as clean. This aimed to create hatred against the government, Li said.

First convictions under the sedition law can carry a maximum penalty of two years in prison, police said. The General Union of Hong Kong Speech Therapists could not be reached for comment.

Inflation is at 2.5% and the Consumer Price Index measure – the average cost of goods and services – is expected to rise to between 3% and 4% by the end of the year.

The Department of Health and Social Care said the pay rise would mean an additional £1,000 per year for the average nurse and a £540 annual increase for porters and cleaners.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said: “NHS staff are rightly receiving a pay rise this year despite the wider public sector pay pause, in recognition of their extraordinary efforts. “Our NHS staff have worked incredibly hard to fight the pandemic for over eighteen months and I’m glad to confirm we are accepting the pay review bodies’ recommendations in full this year, so staff in their remit will receive a 3% pay rise.”

The announcement came at the eleventh hour after its schedule release at 1.30pm on Wednesday was aborted when no agreement could be reached.

Unison said it was pleased the Government had moved from its initial recommendation of a 1% pay rise, but added that staff deserved more.

U.S. dollar advances to three-month high in safety move.

The U.S. dollar climbed to a three-month peak on Tuesday in a flight-to-safety bid, as investors remained anxious about a fast-spreading coronavirus variant that could throttle global growth.

Commodity currencies tied to risk appetite such as the Australian and New Zealand dollars struggled, with investors opting for safety or staying on the sidelines amid renewed fears about the highly contagious Delta variant, now the dominant coronavirus strain worldwide.

U.S. infections have surged, especially in areas where vaccinations have lagged.

The dollar rose as yield differentials have moved against it. Benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yields dipped to a five-month low below 1.20% on Monday on renewed skepticism about a strong economic rebound from the pandemic.

“Shifts in relative growth rate expectations are weakening capital flows out of the U.S. and heightening the appeal of dollar-denominated investments,” said Karl Schamotta, chief market strategist at Cambridge Global Payments in Toronto.

“At the same time, an unwinding in speculative positions is forcing a short squeeze in currency markets – driving the dollar upward,” he added.

In afternoon trading, the dollar index, a measure of its value against six major currencies, rose 0.1% to 92.961, after hitting a three-month high of 93.161 earlier in the session.

In other currencies, the euro weakened 0.2% to $1.1780, after dipping to $1.1755, the lowest since early April ahead of a European Central Bank policy decision on Thursday.

The British pound was also among the biggest losers, with the currency declining 0.4% to $1.3607, as Boris Johnson’s “freedom day” – ending more than a year of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in England – was marred by surging infections.

The Australian dollar dropped to its lowest since late November and was last down 0.2% at US$0.7331.

The Aussie’s losses were broad-based as minutes of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s policy meeting this month were seen by some economists as a sign that the central bank may reverse a decision to taper stimulus.

In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin sank as low as $29,296.39, a level not seen since June 22. It was last down 3.4% at $29,779. Rival ether fell 1.5% to $1,789.32.
