Antivirus Founder John McAfee Dies by Suicide

The anti-virus software founder John McAfee was found dead in a Spanish prison on Wednesday, hours after a Spanish court approved his extradition to the United States to face tax charges.

He apparently died by suicide in his prison cell near Barcelona. Security personnel tried to revive him, but the jail’s medical team finally certified his death, a statement from the regional Catalan government said.

“A judicial delegation has arrived to investigate the causes of death,” the statement read. “Everything points to death by suicide.”

McAfee was arrested last October at Barcelona’s international airport and had been in jail since then awaiting the outcome of extradition proceedings.

The arrest followed charges the same month in Tennessee for evading taxes after failing to report income from promoting cryptocurrencies while he did consulting work, made speaking engagements and sold the rights to his life story for a documentary. The criminal charges carried a prison sentence of up to 30 years.

Former NSA consultant and data privacy advocate Edward Snowden tweeted on Wednesday that Julian Assange “could be next.”

“Europe should not extradite those accused of non-violent crimes to a court system so unfair — and prison system so cruel — that native-born defendants would rather die than become subject to it. Julian Assange could be next,” Snowden tweeted.

“Until the system is reformed, a moratorium should remain,” he added

McAfee founded the software company McAfee Associates in 1987 and ran it until 1994, when he resigned from the company.

McAfee Associates achieved early success as the creator of McAfee’s first commercial antivirus software, and the business now produces a range of enterprise security software. The company was purchased by Intel in 2011, though it still bears the McAfee brand name.

McAfee’s wealth peaked in 2007 at $100 million, before his investments plummeted in the financial crisis of 2007–2008.

After leaving McAfee Associates his business interests included smartphone apps, cryptocurrency, yoga, and herbal antibiotics. He resided for a number of years in Belize, but returned to the United States in 2013 while wanted in Belize for questioning on suspicion of murder.

McAfee told Associated Press at the time that he was being persecuted by the Belizean government. Belizean police denied that, saying they were simply investigating a crime about which McAfee may have had information. Then-Prime Minister Dean Barrow expressed doubts about McAfee’s mental state, saying, “I don’t want to be unkind to the gentleman, but I believe he is extremely paranoid, even bonkers.”

McAfee was also a political activist. He unsuccessfully sought the Libertarian Party nomination for President of the United States in 2016 and 2020.

European countries set to further ease lockdowns

Italy and Spain are among a number of European countries that are set to further ease their coronavirus lockdown restrictions from Monday.

Most businesses in Italy, including bars and hairdressers, will be free to reopen after more than two months of nationwide lockdown measures.

Spain is set to relax its restrictions outside of Madrid and Barcelona, with groups of up to 10 people free to meet.

The measures follow consistent drops in the number of daily recorded deaths.

On Sunday, Italy recorded the fewest daily deaths since it entered lockdown in March.

It said 145 people had died with the virus in the previous 24 hours. This marked a significant drop from its highest daily death toll, which was more than 900 on 27 March.

In Spain, the daily death toll fell below 100 for the first time since it imposed its lockdown restrictions.

But officials are warning that complacency over the virus could lead to a second wave of infections.

What’s happening on Monday?

Restaurants, bars, cafes, hairdressers and shops will be allowed to reopen in Italy providing social distancing is enforced.

Catholic churches are preparing for the resumption of Mass, but there will be strict social distancing and worshippers must wear face masks. Other faiths will also be allowed to hold religious services.

But health officials have warned of the continued dangers of large social gatherings.

In Spain, a majority of people will have emerged from lockdown by the end of the week.

Outdoor seating in bars and restaurants will be allowed from Monday, as well as family reunions and meetings between friends providing no more than 10 people gather.

In Madrid and Barcelona, along with parts of the north-west, the majority of restrictions will remain in place, but some small shops will be allowed to reopen.

The country is now “very close” to stopping the transmission of the virus, the head of the emergency health centre, Fernando Simon, said on Sunday.

But he warned that the risk of a second wave of cases was “still very big”.

Elsewhere in Europe, Belgium is to begin reopening primary and secondary schools under strict conditions on Monday.

Portugal, Greece, Denmark and Ireland are among a number of countries which are also set to relax their lockdown measures.

In other global developments:

  • More than 4.6 million coronavirus cases have been reported globally, according to Johns Hopkins University, and the total death toll has risen to more than 312,000
  • Brazil has overtaken Spain and Italy to become the country with the fourth-largest number of confirmed infections in the world
  • The chairman of the US Federal Reserve has warned that the American economy may not recover from the pandemic until late 2021
  • The UK has reported 170 new virus-related deaths – the lowest figure since the day after its lockdown began
  • Meanwhile, India has extended its nationwide lockdown until 31 May, although it has been relaxed considerably

Coronavirus: Five footballers test positive in Spain

Five players have tested positive for coronavirus across Spain’s top two divisions, La Liga has said.

The unnamed players are all asymptomatic and are now in isolation.

They will continue to be tested and can only rejoin training when they return two consecutive negative results.

La Liga started testing players last week as part of the protocols in place for training to resume and elite football in Spain to get going again behind closed doors in June.

A number of clubs, including Barcelona, started individual training last week.

Spain has been one of the worst hit countries in Europe with 26,621 deaths and 224,390 infections as of 10 May.

Elsewhere in Europe this weekend:

  • A third player from Premier League side Brighton tested positive for coronavirus
  • Bundesliga 2 side Dynamo Dresden put their entire squad and coaching staff into two-week isolation after two players tested positive for coronavirus
  • Three players from Portuguese top-flight side Vitoria Guimaraes tested positive
