13th African Achievers Awards holds in UK

The 13th African Achievers Award (AAA) is to hold in United Kingdom on July 14th 2023.

Hosted by The Lord Woolley of Woodford, (Member of The House of Lords, Lord Temporal), the Arican Achievers Awards, which focuses on Africa and Africans, is one of the most prestigious awards recognising exceptional Africans for their contributions to the development of the continent.

The theme for this year’s event is ‘Unlocking Trade and Investment Opportunities for Sustainable Development in Africa’.

On the choice of this year’s theme, Chief Executive Officer of AAA, Dr. Tonye Rex Idaminabo, reiterated the importance of addressing the challenges in Africa for a prosperous, equitable and sustainable future on the continent.

World Bank reassures of continuous support for Nigeria

The World Bank has reassured of its commitment to support governments at all levels in Nigeria to deliver on their mandate of providing good governance and services to the people.

Shubham Chaudhuri, Country Director of the Bank, said this at the induction for elected governors in Nigeria in Abuja on Wednesday.

Chaudhuri said that the bank looked forward to more bilateral engagements and programmes that could be supported in various states.

“We are here to help Nigerian government, both the federal and sub national level to deliver to all your citizens”.

“We can we are here to support Nigeria, not just for financing, but hopefully to provide support in any way we can to meet its challenges”.

“Beyond financing, we provide a range of analytic and advisory services,” Chaudhuri said.

He said that Nigeria had no reason not to be on positive trajectory in terms of GDP and Per Capita Income like Indonesia who shared certain similarities with the country including oil production, population and democracy.

Speaking with newsmen at the sideline of the event Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State said that he believed the bank should raise a red flag on Nigeria’s rising debt profile

“Honestly, you heard me ask a question. I wonder what the World Bank is doing”.

“Apart from giving us grants, assistance States Fiscal Transparency, Accountability, and Sustainability (SFTAS) and of course loans they should be able to raise a red flag.

“They should be able to tell the managers of our economy that we cannot continue to borrow endlessly,” he said.

Mohammed said that the rising debt profile of government had affected both the federal and state governments, hence the need for country to correct its perception about debt and for states to look inward for resources.

“Our debt servicing requirement is about 95 per cent of the revenue. So the states are affected by this macro economic reality.

“The oil proceeds are not been shared. And we are here celebrating success, what success?

“We are going to go under, unless we do something inward to really correct our own perception, our own notions and our own approaches to the management of the economy of the country”.

“It is a monolithic economy. And yet even where we are getting money, we have taken so much up front. The federation has to be looked at as a structure because states have to have a say in the management of the economy,” Mohammed said.

On his part, the Plateau State Governor-elect, Mr Caleb Mutfwang, said Nigeria did not need World Bank to serve it warning before knowing that its debt profile had gotten to an alarming point.

Apple and Google Lead Initiative For An Industry Specification To Address Unwanted Tracking

Location-tracking devices help users find personal items like their keys, purse, luggage, and more through crowdsourced finding networks. However, they can also be misused for unwanted tracking of individuals.

Today Apple and Google jointly submitted a proposed industry specification to help combat the misuse of Bluetooth location-tracking devices for unwanted tracking. The first-of-its-kind specification will allow Bluetooth location-tracking devices to be compatible with unauthorised tracking detection and alerts across iOS and Android platforms. Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, eufy Security, and Pebblebee have expressed support for the draft specification, which offers best practices and instructions for manufacturers, should they choose to build these capabilities into their products.

“Apple launched AirTag to give users the peace of mind knowing where to find their most important items,” said Ron Huang, Apple’s vice president of Sensing and Connectivity. “We built AirTag and the Find My network with a set of proactive features to discourage unwanted tracking — a first in the industry — and we continue to make improvements to help ensure the technology is being used as intended. This new industry specification builds upon the AirTag protections, and through collaboration with Google results in a critical step forward to help combat unwanted tracking across iOS and Android.”

“Bluetooth trackers have created tremendous user benefits, but they also bring the potential of unwanted tracking, which requires industrywide action to solve,” said Dave Burke, Google’s vice president of Engineering for Android. “Android has an unwavering commitment to protecting users, and will continue to develop strong safeguards and collaborate with the industry to help combat the misuse of Bluetooth tracking devices.”

In addition to incorporating feedback from device manufacturers, input from various safety and advocacy groups has been integrated into the development of the specification.

“The National Network to End Domestic Violence has been advocating for universal standards to protect survivors — and all people — from the misuse of Bluetooth tracking devices. This collaboration and the resulting standards are a significant step forward. NNEDV is encouraged by this progress,” said Erica Olsen, the National Network to End Domestic Violence’s senior director of its Safety Net Project. “These new standards will minimise opportunities for abuse of this technology and decrease the burden on survivors in detecting unwanted trackers. We are grateful for these efforts and look forward to continuing to work together to address unwanted tracking and misuse.”

“Today’s release of a draft specification is a welcome step to confront harmful misuses of Bluetooth location trackers,” said Alexandra Reeve Givens, the Center for Democracy & Technology’s president and CEO. “CDT continues to focus on ways to make these devices more detectable and reduce the likelihood that they will be used to track people. A key element to reducing misuse is a universal, OS-level solution that is able to detect trackers made by different companies on the variety of smartphones that people use every day. We commend Apple and Google for their partnership and dedication to developing a uniform solution to improve detectability. We look forward to the specification moving through the standardisation process and to further engagement on ways to reduce the risk of Bluetooth location trackers being misused.”

The specification has been submitted as an Internet-Draft via the Internet Engineering Task Force(IETF), a leading standards development organisation. Interested parties are invited and encouraged to review and comment over the next three months. Following the comment period, Apple and Google will partner to address feedback, and will release a production implementation of the specification for unwanted tracking alerts by the end of 2023 that will then be supported in future versions of iOS and Android.

Best moments from the Coronation as Charles and Camilla crowned King and Queen

History was made today as King Charles III and Queen Camilla were crowned in a Coronation full of symbolism and pageantry.  The King hosted a scaled-back celebration, in keeping with his new role as ‘monarch in modern-day Britain’.  Despite a stripped-back guestlist and a shorter service to that of his late mother’s, the reported £100-million-pound event was still rooted in long-standing tradition.
While millions of royal fans tuned in to watch the celebration across the world, some 2,000 guests were invited to witness it first-hand inside the grand Westminster Abbey.
The event brought together around 100 heads of state, kings and queens from across the globe, celebrities, everyday heroes and family and friends of the couple.
The majority of the royal family was also there to support the King and Queen – including Prince Harry who managed to make an appearance before dashing home to his son’s birthday party. In true British fashion, the extraordinary procession was greeted by rain and saw around 7,000 personnel take part in the largest military ceremonial operation of its kind in a generation. Months of meticulous planning and preparation went into the Coronation and now it has finally come to a close, we have taken a look at some of the best moments from the monumental occasion. While all eyes were undoubtedly on King Charles and Queen Camilla, their grandchildren arguably stole the show at times.

Princess Charlotte melted hearts when viewers spotted her sweet gesture for brother Prince Louis. The siblings were spotted holding hands as the ceremony got underway at the abbey this morning.  During the sweet moment, Charlotte could be seen with her hand on top of her brother’s while she bowed  her head, and the excited Prince looked on. Eagle-eyed viewers later noticed five-year-old Louis appeared to be dazzled by his mum’s occasion wear as she wore a traditional robe for the service. In one particularly sweet moment, the little boy was captured staring up at his mum, with his mouth wide open in awe.

Prince William swore his loyalty to his father in a solemn rite, kneeling to give an oath of allegiance to his father. He said: “I, William, Prince of Wales, pledge my loyalty to you and faith and truth I will bear unto you, as your liege man of life and limb. So help me God.” He then stood up, touched the crown and gave his father a kiss on the cheek. The King appeared to be moved by his son’s gesture as he nodded and appeared to say a few words to him.

The Princess of Wales wowed  royalists when she arrived at the abbey in a show-stopping ivory dress complete with a royal blue robe and stunning leaf headpiece.
As part of her outfit, Kate paid a subtle tribute to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, as she donned a pair of pearl and diamond earrings that had once belonged to Diana and had been gifted to her by her the then-Prince Charles just before their wedding in 1981. And it wasn’t just Diana who received a sweet nod from Kate with her outfit choice either, as she also honoured her late grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II, as she wore the George IV Festoon Necklace. The necklace was made in 1950 at the request of King George VI for his daughter, the now-late Queen.
The Princess was also twinning with her daughter Charlotte as the pair dazzled in similar sparkly headpieces.

THE CROWNING;
It was the moment we had all been waiting for when King Charles was finally crowned – and became the 40th reigning sovereign. The pivotal moment came at midday, when the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby placed the St Edward’s Crown upon Charles’ anointed head. The King prayed to be a “blessing” to people of “every faith and conviction”. The archbishop had to adjust the weighty crown for a few seconds on top of the monarch’s head. Once complete, it prompted a fanfare, as the abbey bells rang out as well as a Gun Salute fired by The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery stationed at Horse Guards Parade. Soon after her husband, Camilla had her own special moment when Queen Mary’s crown was placed on her anointed head by the Archbishop. While his wife Meghan Markle stayed home in California to look after their children and celebrate Archie’s birthday, Prince Harry managed to be there in support of his dad – even if it was just for a few hours. The Prince was shown walking into the abbey alongside sisters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

H.E. Itoua To Presents Gas, Marginal Field, Exploration Opportunities At Invest In African Energy Paris Forum.

At the Invest in African Energy Paris Forum, H.E. Bruno Jean Richard Itoua, Minister of Hydrocarbons of the Republic of Congo, will present on opportunities in gas and marginal field exploration.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, April 24, 2023/ — The African Energy Chamber (AEC) (www.EnergyChamber.org), the voice of Africa’s energy sector, is proud to announce that H.E. Bruno Jean-Richard Itoua, Minister of Hydrocarbons of the Republic of Congo, will speak at the Invest in African Energy Forum in Paris on the 1st of June. The event aims to facilitate connections between European investors and African executives, and with H.E. Minister Itoua’s participation, insight into one of Africa’s most exciting E&P players will be provided.

H.E. Itoua brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge of the oil and gas industry, having served as the Head of the National Petroleum Company of Congo for seven years. Itoua’s impressive professional career in the energy sector and his strong academic background in engineering and business administration make him the perfect candidate to manage the up-and-coming developments in Congo’s oil and gas sector, as evidenced by his appointment as the President of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries for 2022.

Under Itoua’s leadership, the Republic of Congo has made significant strides in maximizing its hydrocarbon industry. Through policy reforms and various upstream, midstream and downstream expansion campaigns such as the Gas Master Plan, the Minister has promoted local content and capacity building programs aimed at boosting the country’s entire hydrocarbon sector. These efforts have resulted in Congo becoming one of Africa’s largest oil producers and has positioned it to become one of the next countries to join the list of Africa’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) producers.

One such effort is the ongoing Litchendjili Gas Project, which transitions Congo into a regional clean energy powerhouse and a global gas hub. With the country’s ten trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves, the Republic of Congo is attracting significant investment in its natural gas industry. Eni Congo’s recent agreement with Wison Heavy Industry to construct its second floating LNG (FLNG) facility in Congo, with a capacity of 2.4 million tons of gas per annum, is a significant step towards maximizing its gas operations for both domestic use and export to meet Europe’s growing energy demand. The FLNG facility is part of Eni’s gas valorization plan in the Marine XII block offshore Congo, with a goal of increasing LNG production to three million tons per year by 2025.

The Minister has played a vital role in promoting Congo’s natural gas industry and attracting foreign investment. He has collaborated closely with companies like Eni Congo to develop the Marine XII block and establish Congo as a major player in the global LNG market. The recently signed ten-year contract between Eni Congo and Expro Group for the development of an onshore LNG pre-treatment plant will further boost LNG production for local electricity generation, supporting Congo’s gas monetization agenda and contributing to GDP growth. In short, H.E. Itoua’s impressive leadership has helped position Congo as a key player in the global energy market, with a promising future ahead.

“We are delighted to have H.E. Bruno Jean Richard Itoua, the Minister of Hydrocarbons of the Republic of Congo, join us at the Invest in African Energy reception in Paris. His attendance further highlights the importance of Africa as a key player in the global energy industry and the potential for collaboration between European investors and African executives. We look forward to hearing his insights on investment opportunities in Africa’s energy sector,” states NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.

H.E. Itoua’s attendance at the Invest in African Energy Forum in Paris and his presentation on investment opportunities in gas, marginal field, and exploration in the Congo highlights the country’s commitment to maximizing its hydrocarbon industry. With his extensive knowledge and experience in the energy sector, he will be instrumental in connecting potential investors with new oil and gas opportunities in the country.

Japan’s ispace Is Set To Become The First Private Company To Land On The Moon

Three governments have landed spacecraft on the Moon – but no private company has managed to do so in the history of human space exploration.

A Japanese company is attempting to change that and become the first.

Tokyo-based company ispace fired its lander off on a five-month journey to lunar orbit back in December.

It was launched on a SpaceX rocket, which was also carrying the United Arab Emirates’ first lunar rover and a toy-like robot from Japan that’s designed to roll around in the Moon’s grey dust.

On Tuesday, flight controllers will direct the craft – named Hakuto (Japanese for white rabbit) – to descend from 100 km high and land.

The 7-foot lander will transport the UAE’s mini lunar rover and the Japanese robot.

The UAE’s rover’s wheels have European Space Agency-designed panels, so when the rover touches down it will be the first European technology to make contact with the lunar surface.

“The invitation to contribute to the Rashid rover’s wheel-based Material Adhesion and Abrasion Detection experiment was an offer we couldn’t refuse,” said Aidan Cowley of ESA’s ExPeRT (Exploration Preparation, Research, and Technology) team, developing new technologies for human lunar and planetary exploration, based at the European Astronaut Centre in Germany.

“This is a chance to touch the Moon for real, to see how material technologies that we have already been working on behave in the actual lunar environment. So we will see how they interact with the regolith as the wheels make contact with the surface, as well as enduring wider lunar conditions”.

Only three governments have successfully landed on the Moon: Russia, the United States, and China. An Israeli non-profit tried to land on the moon in 2019, but its spacecraft was destroyed on impact.

Israel still called the mission an “amazing success” for reaching the Moon and coming so close to landing.

Hakuto took a long, roundabout route to the Moon following its December liftoff, beaming back photos of Earth along the way.

Ispace designed its craft to use minimal fuel to save money and leave more room for cargo. Its route was therefore a slow, low-energy one to the Moon, flying 1.6 million km from Earth before looping back and intersecting with the Moon.

By contrast, NASA’s Orion crew capsule with test dummies took five days to reach the Moon last November.

The ispace lander will aim for Atlas crater in the northeastern section of the Moon’s near side, more than 87 kilometers across and just over 2 km deep. With its four legs extended, the lander is more than 2.3 m tall.

Mauritania’s BirAllah Gas Field: A Revolutionary Development In West Africa’s Gas Sector

The BirAllah gas field is expected to produce 10 million tons of LNG per year  creating new employment opportunities and generating a substantial income for Mauritania.

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania, April 20, 2023/ — Mauritania’s BirAllah gas field, located in the Mauritanian coastal basin, has garnered significant attention from major players in the oil and gas industry, including Bp and Kosmos Energy, due to its immense investment potential.

In October 2022, a deal was signed between the Mauritanian government and these industry giants, setting the stage for the exploration and development of this promising prospect, which is estimated to hold 80 trillion cubic feet of gas.

As per the agreement, Bp will conduct comprehensive studies to enable the field’s development to commence within 36 months. The stakeholders are hopeful that these studies will establish the feasibility of establishing companies to exploit the project in the strategic port area of Ngago, located in southwest Mauritania, which is the closest coastal point to the field.

The BirAllah gas field possesses numerous attributes that makes it an attractive investment opportunity. It boasts a well-defined structure, high-quality reservoir properties, and top-grade gas. Moreover, the field has the potential for significant production rates, with initial estimates suggesting it could yield up to 4 billion cubic feet of gas per day.

The development of the BirAllah field is of significant importance to Mauritania’s gas industry (https://apo-opa.info/3UTUPmb), which has faced challenges in attracting investment in the past due to political instability and inadequate infrastructure. However, the discovery of the BirAllah field has the potential to change this narrative, as it represents one of the largest offshore gas discoveries in Africa in recent years.

The participation of prominent global companies such as Bp and Kosmos Energy in the BirAllah field underscores the immense investment potential of this oil field. These prominent global companies not only bring substantial capital but also possess the expertise and advanced technology required for unlocking the BirAllah gas field’s maximum development potential. Furthermore, this development is expected to attract additional international oil companies (IOCs) to invest in Mauritania’s gas industry, signalling to the world that Mauritania is a viable investment destination, potentially leading to further exploration and development of the country’s abundant gas reserves.

According to the International Trade Administration, the energy sector offers some of the most promising investment opportunities in the market. Bp and Kosmos Energy are poised to lead the charge in transitioning hydrocarbons as the driving force of Mauritania’s economy, surpassing iron ore. Currently, several supermajor oil and gas companies are exploring offshore Mauritania, with 22 blocks available for leasing. Additionally, there are opportunities for developing fields where oil has already been discovered, as well as providing supplies and logistical support to companies operating within the sector, presenting attractive investment prospects.

The completion of the BirAllah field, projected to take place over multiple years, has the potential to be a game-changer for Mauritania’s economy. The first gas exports from the field could be facilitated through the Ngago port area, which boasts the necessary infrastructure, including a deep-water harbor, access to electricity and water, and proximity to major shipping lanes, to support the construction of a gas terminal. The substantial revenue generated from gas exports has the potential to significantly bolster Mauritania’s economy, providing a fresh source of income for the country. Additionally, the development of the BirAllah field has the potential to create new employment opportunities and support the growth of local businesses in the region.

The development of the BirAlla gas field is also expected to create new job opportunities and generate income for Mauritania. This vast reserve of energy promises to power the world and transform the fortunes of the country. With the estimated output of 10 million tons of liquefied natural gas per year, the BirAlla gas field represents an opportunity to boost economic growth and create a more prosperous future for Mauritania.
